Why does the Torah (תורה) say "veyikchu li terumah" (take for Me a gift) rather than "give"? Rabbi Zweig begins by examining three textual anomalies in the command to build the Mishkan (Shemos 25:2): Why does the Torah (תורה) say "veyikchu" (take) rather than "veyitnu" (give)? What does "li" (for Me) mean? And why is the word order "take for Me a gift" rather than "take a gift for Me"? A Midrash Tanchuma on this verse seems cryptic: it cites Mishlei's teaching that "a good name is better than great wealth," applying it to Moshe versus Korach. Korach gave 250 fire-pans—enormous material contributions—yet God tells Moshe his "name" is superior. The Midrash appears disconnected from the verse; Rav Dovid Luria suggests text is missing. Rabbi Zweig argues it is the key to understanding the entire parsha.
