Why does the Torah (תורה) wait until the accounting of the Mishkan materials to tell us God forgave the Golden Calf? Rashi (רש"י) uses the unusual term "overlooked" rather than "forgave." The shiur develops the idea that true forgiveness means treating a transgression as a non-issue—God immediately resumed working miraculously with Israel. The lesson applies to all relationships: after someone recognizes wrongdoing, we must judge them as we judge ourselves.
Rabbi Zweig opens with a foundational question on Parshas Vayakhel. Rashi (רש"י) states that the Mishkan is called "Mishkan HaEdut" (Mishkan of Testimony) because it testified that God overlooked (vita'er) the sin of the Golden Calf, allowing His presence to dwell among Israel. The Maharal and others ask: why is the Mishkan the proof of forgiveness, and not the second set of Luchos (tablets)? Rabbi Zweig notes that Rashi in Bereishis (on Rivka's bracelets) teaches that the two tablets symbolized love and relationship, not the imposition of law. Therefore, receiving new tablets could theoretically be an act of renewed obligation rather than renewed affection. But Rabbi Zweig's main difficulty is even sharper: if the proof is the Mishkan, why does the Torah (תורה) wait until the accounting passage—after the materials were donated, the work completed, and the inventory taken—to tell us God forgave the sin? The logical place would be when God first commanded Moshe to build the Mishkan, not at the retrospective accounting stage. The second major question concerns Rashi's unusual choice of language. Rashi writes that God "overlooked" (vita'er) the sin, not that He "forgave" (machol) it. This is striking because the Talmud (תלמוד) warns, "Whoever says God overlooks transgressions will have his life overlooked." How can Rashi use this very term in a positive sense?
