Why does Avrohom offer his guests a simple barbecue while Lot throws a mishteh, a lavish party? Lot defined himself by his possessions and achievements—when forced to flee Sodom, he couldn't leave his wealth because without it, he was nothing. Avrohom, by contrast, practiced nefesh shefeilah—defining himself by inner purpose, not external pleasures—making guests comfortable rather than showcasing an event.
The shiur opens with a striking contrast: Avrohom offers travelers shade and a modest meal, yet the text says he offered "little." Lot, however, prepares a mishteh—a full party with fine wine, crystal, and ambiance. On the surface, Lot appears to be the more gracious host, which seems impossible given Avrohom's stature as the father of chesed (חסד). Rabbi Zweig explains that the Torah (תורה) is teaching a fundamental distinction. Avrohom's hospitality is driven entirely by making guests comfortable—he minimizes what he offers ("just shade, just water") so they feel they are imposing as little as possible. His focus is on helping people, not on creating an event. Lot's mishteh, by contrast, is about the event itself—the guests become props in Lot's self-definition, part of the display of wealth and status.
