Why does the Torah (תורה) say "vayikchu lecha terumah" (take for Me a contribution) rather than "give"? The shiur develops a profound yesod that true love means absolute trust, where giving becomes receiving. Because Klal Yisrael demonstrated such trust at Har Sinai through naaseh v'nishma, our contributions to the Mishkan are actually taking—we receive by giving to One who loves us and seeks only our benefit.
The shiur opens with a Midrash challenging the verse "ahavti eschem amar Hashem (ה׳)" (I loved you, says Hashem) contrasted with "v'es Eisav saneisi" (but Eisav I hated). Turnus Rufus asks Rabbi Akiva why God would hate anyone. Rabbi Akiva responds with a mashal about two dogs named Rufus and Rufina. When Turnus Rufus becomes angry that dogs bear his name, Rabbi Akiva explains: just as you're upset that an animal shares your name, how much more so should God be upset when people call idols by His name. This seems like an overly elaborate answer to a simple question, raising the question of what deeper principle Rabbi Akiva is teaching. The shiur then connects this to another difficult passage: the Gemara (גמרא) in Shabbos (שבת) where a Tzeduki mocks the Jewish people for saying "naaseh v'nishma" (we will do and we will hear) at Har Sinai. The Tzeduki claims this shows Jews are hasty and foolish—who commits to something before knowing what it entails? Rava responds cryptically: "temimus of those who go straight will guide them; those who go with cunning considerations will be destroyed." What kind of answer is this? How does being naive justify what appears to be foolish behavior?

The shiur explains that Moshe's complete faithfulness—working solely for Hashem's agenda—transformed counting from an act of personal ownership into one that strengthened divine connection, thereby increasing blessings. Korach's self-interest inverted this principle, costing him everything.
Why does Rashi describe the Mishkan as "collateral" for Jewish sins? Rabbi Zweig develops the concept that God limited His own collection rights—accepting only the Mishkan's destruction rather than the nation's annihilation. This reflects the relationship of a father who reduces his own claims to ensure his children's survival.
Why does the Torah give a detailed accounting of silver and copper but not gold in Parshas Pekudei?
