Why were the Nesi'im punished for offering deficit funding when that seems like the greatest commitment? The shiur explains that true leadership isn't about guaranteeing a task gets done—it's about empowering and motivating people to do it themselves. By waiting to fill in gaps rather than leading by example, the Nesi'im de-incentivized participation and failed in their role as leaders.
The shiur opens with Rashi (רש"י)'s comment on Parshas Vayakhel, where the Nesi'im brought the precious stones last rather than first. Rashi cites Chazal that the Nesi'im decided to let the community contribute first and then complete whatever was lacking. Because the community ended up providing everything on their own, the Nesi'im had nothing left to contribute. As a result, they were punished by having a letter yud removed from their name (Nesi'im written defectively). At first glance, this punishment seems entirely unjust. Deficit funding—an uncapped commitment to cover whatever shortfall remains—is the most generous and responsible form of giving. It guarantees that the project will be completed regardless of cost, potentially requiring the donors to give their entire fortune. Why should the Nesi'im be punished for making such an extraordinary commitment?
