This shiur explores one of the most challenging areas of human relationships: the parent-child dynamic. Rabbi Zweig begins by acknowledging the universal tension—children feel controlled, parents insist they only want what's best—and asks whether Torah (תורה) thought can reconcile this conflict or at least illuminate its source. The foundational text is Parshas Terumah, where the Torah describes the golden crown (zer) that adorns both the Shulchan (Table) and the Aron (Ark). The word zer means "crown," yet it is spelled in a way that could also be read zor, meaning "estranged." The Gemara (גמרא) in Yoma derives from this dual reading a principle: if one merits proper relationship with Torah (the Aron) or with sovereignty/wealth (the Shulchan), it becomes a crown; if not, it becomes estrangement. The Torah is not external—it is embedded in us from the womb. When we fail to actualize it, we don't merely "not get it"; we become estranged from ourselves, creating internal conflict like a body rejecting a transplant.
