Why does the Torah (תורה) say "take a terumah" instead of "give"? Rabbi Zweig explains that true giving requires standing in the receiver's shoes. Hashem (ה׳) didn't want money; He wanted the Jewish people to buy into His agenda—a relationship. The half-shekel gift was never about funding—it was about connection.
Rabbi Zweig addresses three textual difficulties in Parshas Terumah. First, why does the Torah (תורה) say "they should take my portion" rather than "they should give"? Second, why does Hashem (ה׳) emphasize that only a person "whose heart will motivate him" should give—when the request is merely a half-shekel, insignificant pocket change for the wealthy Jews who left Egypt? Third, why does the Torah list the materials for the Mishkan (gold, silver, copper, colored wools) which the Sages say correspond to the holidays—what is the connection between these materials and the festivals at this moment in the narrative? Rabbi Zweig begins by establishing that the Torah is not asking for significant money. The half-shekel contributions—one for the sockets of the Mishkan, one for the communal sacrifices, and the voluntary materials—are trivial amounts for a people described as fabulously wealthy. This is "chump change," an amount so small it would be insulting to suggest it requires motivation to give. The key, therefore, is that the Torah is not asking for motivation to part with money; rather, it's asking that the giver invest his heart. Hashem wants the Jewish people to buy into the cause, not merely to donate funds. The phrase "asher yidvenu libo" means "who will donate his heart"—the gift (nedavah) is the heart, not the money.
