Why didn't Moshe initially consult the Nesi'im about the Mishkan? Parshas Vayakhel transforms the Mishkan from individual obligations into a community project, harnessing peer pressure and the power of belonging. This communal dynamic—so powerful it justifies postponing even Kriyat Shema—is the tikun for the Egel, where destructive group momentum nearly destroyed Klal Yisrael.
The shiur addresses three questions from Parshas Vayakhel: why the Nesi'im were criticized for delaying their donations, why Moshe didn't initially involve them, and why specifically here the Torah (תורה) introduces the requirement of nim'lachim b'tzibur—consulting the community before appointing Betzalel. The Gemara (גמרא) in Sanhedrin says the Nesi'im were "lazy" and had a yud removed from their name, yet Avos d'Rebbe Nosson presents them as taking initiative by bringing the Avnei Shoham. The Gemara in Brachos derives from this parsha that leaders must receive communal approval. Why here? The key insight is that Parshas Vayakhel marks a fundamental transformation in the nature of the Mishkan project. Until now, each individual Jew was obligated by Hashem (ה׳) to contribute to the Mishkan—a direct divine command to six hundred thousand individuals. But after the sin of the Golden Calf, Moshe instituted a new dynamic: Vayakhel—he gathered the people together to make the Mishkan a community effort. The Midrash connects this Vayakhel to the vayikahel of the Egel, where the people gathered against Aharon. The tikun for that destructive communal gathering is a holy communal gathering.
