Rabbi Zweig opens with the striking linguistic problem in Parshas Terumah: the Torah (תורה) instructs the Jewish people to "take" a gift for the Mishkan rather than "give" one. This awkwardness is compounded by the fact that the gift requiring "a generous heart" is merely a half-shekel—an absurdly small sum for the wealthy Jews who had just left Egypt laden with treasure. The question is sharpened by the redundant command "speak to the Jewish people" following "saying," which the Baal HaTurim interprets as a call to persuade—suggesting the half-shekel requires unusual motivation despite being trivial in monetary terms. Rabbi Zweig resolves these difficulties by reframing the half-shekel through a corporate ownership model. He brings a Rashi (רש"י) on the rebellion of Korach: when Moshe asks God not to accept Korach's gifts, he means their pro-rata share in the daily communal sacrifices (the Korban Tamid). This reveals that every Jew who gave the half-shekel wasn't merely donating—he was purchasing a stake in the Jewish community, analogous to buying shares in a corporation.
