Why is the command to build the Mishkan phrased as "take for Me" rather than "give to Me"? The shiur explores how giving the Torah (תורה) conferred independence and eternality upon the Jewish people—so much so that Hashem (ה׳) now "comes to us" through the Mishkan. This independence, rooted in Torah itself, was both empowering and the very thing that precipitated the Cheit HaEgel.
Rabbi Zweig opens by highlighting a striking linguistic anomaly: the Torah (תורה) commands "Vayikchu li terumah"—"take for Me an offering"—rather than "give." Midrashim note that Torah itself is called a lekach, something "taken." This raises the question: what are we taking? What does Hashem (ה׳) "give away" that He now has less of? A Gemara (גמרא) in Brachos deepens the puzzle. It states that when Hashem gave the Torah, unlike a human seller who feels loss and sadness after a sale, Hashem remained happy—even afterward continuing to praise what He gave. This presents a paradox: what did Hashem "sell" or relinquish at Sinai? He gained subjects and obedience; He did not lose anything tangible. Yet the Gemara frames Matan Torah as a transaction in which the Giver parts with something precious.
