This formulation is puzzling. First, why is lashon hara characterized as "noise" when the prohibition concerns harmful content, not sound? Second, why specifically does the me'il atone—what is the connection between the garment's bells and the sin of lashon hara? Third, why does it atone for lashon hara specifically rather than other speech-related sins like false oaths or cursing a judge? The shiur develops a fundamental insight into the psychology of lashon hara. Most people assume lashon hara is an attack weapon—we speak badly about people who have wronged us, as retaliation. But Chazal reveal a deeper truth: lashon hara primarily stems from the speaker's own inner emptiness and low self-esteem. A person who feels inadequate seeks to feel better by making others appear lower than himself. This explains why people often speak lashon hara about their closest friends and even family members—not because these people have harmed them, but because their success and virtues highlight the speaker's own feelings of inadequacy.
