Why does the Mishkan require knowledge of the letters of creation, and why do its 39 labors define Shabbos (שבת)? The shiur explains that the Mishkan is a microcosm of the universe—a pristine space where relationship with Hashem (ה׳) sustains existence. After the Churban, the Beis Midrash became that world, demanding serious reverence through proper dress and conduct at davening.
Rabbi Zweig opens by noting that this shiur departs from the usual pattern of presenting a new hashkafic insight (hasagah); instead, he addresses a practical issue rooted in the conceptual foundation of the Mishkan and the Beis Midrash. The shiur begins with the classic question arising from Parshas Vayakhel: Why are the 39 melachos of Shabbos (שבת) derived from the labors performed in constructing the Mishkan? The word "eleh" hints at 36, plus "ha" and the plural "dvarim" yield 39—the 39 melachos enumerated to Moshe at Sinai. The juxtaposition of Shabbos and the Mishkan in the Torah (תורה) cannot be coincidental. What is the essential connection between our service in the Mishkan and the prohibitions of Shabbos? The Gemara (גמרא) teaches that Betzalel knew the letters (osios) with which Heaven and Earth were created. Why would a craftsman need such esoteric knowledge? The answer, Rabbi Zweig explains, is that the Mishkan is not merely a functional building for Divine service—it is a microcosm of the universe itself. The Mishkan embodies the perfect world as it should be, undamaged by sin. Betzalel was not simply constructing a structure; he was recreating a universe. Just as Hashem (ה׳) rested on Shabbos from the acts of creation, we refrain on Shabbos from the very activities that went into creating the Mishkan-world. The 39 melachos of the Mishkan are the 39 creative acts that define building a world, and therefore they are the activities from which we rest on Shabbos.
