Why do speakers of lashon hara typically begin with something positive? The Midrash on the meraglim reveals that starting with praise creates trust, making the subsequent criticism more believable. This psychological manipulation distinguishes between truth-based deception and relationship-based character assassination.
This shiur analyzes a puzzling Midrash regarding the meraglim (spies) that appears to begin with an irrelevant pasuk. The Midrash states that "such is the way of speakers of lashon hara - they begin with good and conclude with bad," but brings this teaching on a pasuk where the spies merely showed fruit, before they actually spoke. Rabbi Zweig distinguishes between two approaches to understanding this pattern. Rashi (רש"י) interprets this as a general principle about lying: any falsehood that wants to be believed must begin with some truth to establish credibility. According to this reading, the liar creates an impression of objectivity and accuracy, making the subsequent lie more believable.

Dedicate a Shiur in Parsha
L'ilui nishmas a loved one. In honor of a simcha or yahrzeit. As a zechus for a refuah sheleimah. Your dedication helps carry Rabbi Zweig's Torah to learners around the world.
Why does the red heifer law create an apparent contradiction where those who purify others become impure themselves? The Parah Adumah represents God's kiss - creating necessary separation so we feel independent and valued rather than consumed by His presence.
Why was Moshe punished for hitting the rock instead of speaking to it? Both produce miraculous water for millions. The deeper issue wasn't thirst but insecurity about water supply after Miriam's death. Speaking to the rock would have taught that nature itself responds to Jewish needs, providing true security rather than a temporary fix.
