Why was Moshe punished for hitting the rock instead of speaking to it? Speaking would have shown divine will (ratzon) to which creation automatically responds, while hitting showed direct divine action. The lesson: humans alone have choice, but should use it to consciously develop Torah (תורה) instincts that make responding to Hashem (ה׳) as natural as creation's automatic obedience.
This shiur examines the complex issue of Mei Merivah from Parshas Chukas, specifically analyzing Rashi (רש"י)'s explanation of why Moshe Rabbeinu was punished for hitting the rock instead of speaking to it as commanded. Rabbi Yeshaya Greenberg ZT"L begins by presenting Rashi's position that the sin was in the method - speaking would have created a greater kiddush Hashem (ה׳) than hitting.
