Why does the Torah (תורה) account for how silver and copper were used but not gold? Ehrliche people don't suspect others of dishonesty.
Rabbi Zweig addresses a difficult question posed by Rav Saadia Gaon and brought by Ibn Ezra in Parshas Pekudei. The Torah (תורה) provides an accounting of the Mishkan materials—detailing how much gold, silver, and copper was collected—but while it explains what was done with the silver and copper, it omits an accounting for the gold. The Ibn Ezra and Ramban (רמב"ן) offer explanations, but the question remains: why the discrepancy in the accounting? The shiur turns to a Midrash that describes three groups of people who overheard conversations about Moshe's trustworthiness while building the Mishkan. One group praised Moshe as perfectly righteous. A second group suspected him of enriching himself at the community's expense, pointing to his physical appearance as evidence of lavish living. A third group defended him, saying it was reasonable for someone managing such a great project to receive fair compensation. When Moshe heard these discussions, he resolved to provide a full accounting.
