Why did Israel leave Egypt "beyad ramah" (powerfully) while Egyptians buried their dead? The shiur argues against Sifsei Chachamim's reading that Egypt was merely distracted. Rather, Israel's defiant, victorious departure psychologically devastated Egypt, so they buried their dead to avoid internalizing defeat and maintain their ability to later pursue Israel.
This shiur analyzes the juxtaposition in Parshas Masei between the pasuk describing how Israel left Egypt "beyad ramah" (with an outstretched hand/powerfully) and the immediately following pasuk about Egyptians burying their dead. Rabbi Zweig challenges the Sifsei Chachamim's interpretation that Israel was able to leave because the Egyptians were too distracted with mourning to stop them. Rabbi Zweig brings a fundamental contradiction from Rashi (רש"י) in Parshas Ha'azinu regarding the phrase "be'etzem hayom hazeh" (on that very day), which appears three times in the Torah (תורה). Rashi explains this means at high noon, in full view of everyone. In the cases of Noach entering the ark and the Jews leaving Egypt, enemies threatened to stop them but couldn't. This directly contradicts the notion that Israel snuck out while Egypt was distracted.
