Why did the distinct tribal divisions—so central in the desert and First Temple period—vanish completely after the Babylonian exile? Rabbi Zweig opens by describing the profound structural role the twelve tribes played in Jewish national life. During the desert encampment, each tribe had a fixed position around the Mishkan—three tribes on each of the four sides. In Eretz Yisrael, each received its own distinct territorial inheritance, creating a deeply pluralistic national structure. Even the tribe of Shimon, whose cities were embedded within Yehuda's territory, maintained its own identity. This tribal separation was not incidental but foundational to Klal Yisrael's infrastructure. After the Babylonian exile, however, this entire framework vanished. When Ezra brought the nation back from Bavel, the Gemara (גמרא) describes him as purifying the people "like fine flour" (soleles nekiyah), establishing clear categories of Kohanim, Leviim, and Yisraelim, determining lineage and status. But Ezra made no effort whatsoever to restore tribal distinctions. From the Second Temple period onward, no mention is made of the tribes. The Gemara offers only vague simanim—someone who is litigious might be from Dan, someone drawn to the sea from Zevulun—but these are hints, not real tribal identity. How could something so integral to Jewish identity simply disappear?
