Why does the Midrash compare Torah (תורה) to physical goods that disappear when shared, rather than to skills or professions? The shiur develops the fundamental principle that Torah uniquely shapes each person's character and identity—unlike wisdom that remains external. When one person teaches Torah to another, each develops a completely different derech, making every talmid chacham a unique metzius whose Torah doesn't compete with but complements others.
Rabbi Zweig analyzes a Midrash on Parshas Terumah that compares Torah (תורה) to physical wares through two parables: merchants who trade goods and lose what they give away, and a talmid chacham on a ship whose "merchandise" (Torah knowledge) remains with him even after pirates steal everyone else's possessions. The Midrash seems problematic—why compare Torah only to physical goods that disappear when transferred, rather than to skills like medicine or mathematics that also remain with a person? The shiur's fundamental insight is that Torah differs from all other forms of wisdom (chochmah) in how it relates to the person. Chochmah is external—a body of knowledge one accumulates while remaining essentially unchanged. When a mathematician teaches physics to a physicist, both now possess two fields, but they've also become competitors; the mathematician has "lost" his unique position. Torah, by contrast, requires bittul (self-nullification). The Maharal explains that one must be mevatel himself to Torah, meaning Torah doesn't just add information—it fundamentally shapes and defines the person learning it.
