Why does the Mishkan audit give full accounting for silver and copper but not for gold? A Midrash reveals three types of givers—gold (generous), silver (transactional), and copper (unwanted surplus)—and teaches that we judge others by our own motivations. Those who give selflessly trust Moshe; those who give selfishly suspect him of theft.
Rabbi Zweig opens with a striking observation from Parshas Pekudei: the Torah (תורה) provides a full accounting of the Mishkan donations, but inconsistently. Silver and copper donations are tracked from intake to disbursement, but gold donations are listed only by total amount received, with no itemized breakdown of usage. Rishonim suggest this is because gold was used for coverings that were difficult to weigh precisely, but Rabbi Zweig proposes a deeper answer rooted in human psychology. A Midrash records that Moshe Rabbeinu overheard people talking about him behind his back. Some praised his holiness and trustworthiness; others suspected he was enriching himself from the Mishkan funds; still others argued he deserved fair compensation for his enormous administrative work. Though Hashem (ה׳) declared Moshe completely trustworthy and did not require an accounting, Moshe voluntarily instituted a full audit in response to these suspicions.
