How could Rashi (רש"י) say the berachos were physical ('kemashma'o') yet later claim Yaakov told Esau they were spiritual? The Maharal resolves this by explaining the berachos transform physical reality into spiritual connection - giving Yaakov dominion over Esau's material world by perfecting it through ruchnius.
This shiur explores a complex issue raised by the Maharal regarding two apparently contradictory statements by Rashi (רש"י) about the nature of Yitzchok's berachos to Yaakov. In Parshas Toldos, when giving the berachos, Rashi states 'kemashma'o' (according to its plain meaning), indicating the berachos were physical, while also alluding to Midrashim that suggest spiritual interpretations. However, in Parshas Vayishlach, when Yaakov sends messengers to Esau, Rashi explains that Yaakov is telling Esau not to hate him because the berachos are spiritual, not physical - apparently contradicting the earlier Rashi. The Maharal resolves this contradiction by explaining that both interpretations are correct and complementary. The berachos are indeed physical ('kemashma'o'), but their true value lies in connecting the physical world to spirituality and the Ribono Shel Olam. This connects to the fundamental concept that Olam HaZeh begins as Esau's domain - a world of separation from Hashem (ה׳) - but Yaakov's role is to transform it by creating connection and shleimus. The Maharal explains that Esau was born first because this world initially belongs to him, representing independence and separation from the Divine. However, Yaakov holding onto Esau's heel symbolizes that Esau will never complete his dominion before Yaakov takes it away through spiritual perfection. Yaakov's message to Esau is therefore: 'You have what you want from this world - the purely physical aspects. What I received through the berachos involves transforming the physical into spiritual connection, which doesn't interest you anyway.' The resolution teaches that the physical world has value specifically because our avodah is to perfect it through connecting it to ruchnius, not to bypass it entirely. This is why Olam HaBa isn't mentioned explicitly in the Torah (תורה) - because the Torah's purpose is to bring shleimus to Olam HaZeh, which needs perfection, while Olam HaBa is already perfect.
