Why did Moshe initially reject the women's mirrors for the Mishkan? The shiur reveals that the mirrors weren't tools of vanity but instruments of identity—women used them in Egypt to remind their husbands "Who is the man? Who is the woman?" when Pharaoh's gender-role reversal (avodas perach) threatened Jewish continuity. Rabbi Zweig opens by noting a contemporary debate about innate gender differences versus social conditioning (nature vs. nurture), then turns to Parshas Vayakhel where the women donated copper mirrors for the Mishkan's washbasin. Moshe Rabbeinu initially refused them, viewing mirrors as instruments of vanity and lust, unsuitable for sacred use. Hashem (ה׳) corrected him, declaring these mirrors "more precious than anything else" because through them the Jewish nation multiplied in Egypt. The shiur carefully reads Rashi (רש"י)'s account: when the men were exhausted from avodas perach, the women brought food, then held up mirrors and asked, "Who is nicer looking—you or me?" This seems puzzling if mirrors are simply cosmetic tools; why the comparative question? Rabbi Zweig explains that avodas perach—men doing women's work and women doing men's work—was Pharaoh's psychological birth control. When hard labor failed to reduce Jewish birthrates, Pharaoh recognized that role reversal would erode gender identity itself, lowering libido and initiative. Men doing traditionally feminine tasks began thinking of themselves as women; women doing masculine labor began thinking of themselves as men.
