Why does the Torah (תורה) say "V'heyisem neki'im m'Hashem (ה׳) u'miYisrael" — we must have clean hands before God and people? Doesn't Hashem already know the truth? The shiur develops a profound yesod: Hashem chooses to relate to us within time and space, overlooking our faults and judging us l'kaf zechus. This principle teaches us how to build healthy relationships with family by not scrutinizing motives and focusing only on the good.
Rabbi Zweig begins with a halacha (הלכה) from Shulchan Aruch: when a charity collector exchanges small bills for larger denominations, he should ideally have someone else do the exchange to avoid any appearance of impropriety — fulfilling the principle of "V'heyisem neki'im m'Hashem (ה׳) u'miYisrael" (you shall be clean before Hashem and before Israel). The Midrash Tanchuma applies this principle to Moshe Rabbeinu's detailed accounting of the Mishkan materials in Parshas Pekudei. While Moshe didn't have to give this accounting, he did so to maintain clean hands both before people and before God. This raises a fundamental question: why does the pasuk mention being clean "m'Hashem" — before God? Hashem knows the truth. Why must we maintain an appearance of integrity before the Omniscient One who knows our every thought and deed? Similarly, the Gemara (גמרא) in Shabbos (שבת) states that one who judges others favorably (dan l'kaf zechus) will himself be judged favorably by Hashem. But if Hashem knows the truth, what does it mean that He will "judge us favorably"?
