Why does the Torah (תורה) introduce Shabbos (שבת) with "these are the things God commanded you to do" when Shabbos seems to be about not doing? Rabbi Zweig explores how Shabbos atmosphere, dress, family harmony, and celebration of accomplishment make the day a tangible connection to God.
Rabbi Zweig opens with a seeming contradiction in Parshas Vayakhel: Moshe gathers the entire Jewish community and tells them "these are the things God commanded you to do"—yet Shabbos (שבת) is primarily about refraining from work, not doing. Why categorize Shabbos as "doing"? Why gather everyone together? And why does this parsha immediately follow the sin of the golden calf? The Midrash teaches that Moshe established communal Shabbos learning—fulfilled today through the rabbi's sermon—focusing on the laws of Shabbos. But why specifically Shabbos laws? Rabbi Zweig explains that Shabbos is fundamentally different from every other mitzvah (מצוה). Most mitzvos are individual—keeping kosher, giving charity, putting on tefillin affect the individual alone. But Shabbos creates a communal environment. One person violating Shabbos publicly doesn't just affect himself—it destroys the Shabbos atmosphere for everyone. In Eretz Yisroel, driving through a religious neighborhood on Shabbos isn't merely a personal violation; it undermines the community's Shabbos environment, which is itself a sacred creation.
