Why does Rashi (רש"י) call Yitzchok's blessings physical but hint at deeper spiritual meanings without explaining them? The blessings are genuinely physical, but their purpose is to elevate the material world rather than escape it. Yaakov's mission is unifying physical and spiritual realms across generations, while Esav only sees immediate material benefit.
Rabbi Yeshaya Greenberg ZT"L begins by analyzing the blessings Yitzchok intended to give Esav but which ultimately went to Yaakov through Rivka's intervention. These blessings appear primarily physical - dew of the heavens, fat of the earth, abundant grain, dominion over nations. The central question emerges from Rashi (רש"י)'s commentary: why does Rashi state the blessings are "k'mashma'o" (like they sound - physical) but then cryptically mentions "many midrashim explain these blessings in different ways" without elaborating? This unusual brevity contrasts with Rashi's typical detailed explanations. The Maharal suggests Rashi is addressing why such seemingly mundane physical blessings would cause Rivka such concern and Esav such murderous jealousy. However, this creates a contradiction when comparing Rashi in Parshas Toldos with his commentary in Parshas Vayishlach. In the latter, when Yaakov tells Esav "I lived with Lavan temporarily" and describes his modest possessions, Rashi explains Yaakov is saying the physical aspects of the blessings weren't fulfilled, implying they were actually spiritual blessings Esav wouldn't care about.
