Rabbi Zweig opens by noting several apparent anomalies in Parshas Ki Sisa. The incense formula (which belongs with last week's discussion of the incense altar), the copper laver and washstand (which should have appeared with the other Mishkan vessels), and the sin of the Golden Calf all seem out of place. The key to understanding their placement, he argues, lies in recognizing that Ki Sisa is fundamentally about the creation of the Jewish people as a *community*—not merely a collection of individuals or families, but a self-sustaining entity with continuity, security, and shared values. The parsha begins with a census—Ki Sisa, "when you lift up" the heads of the Jewish people. A census signifies that the nation has reached critical mass, enough people to form a true community capable of supporting its own institutions, schools, and economic infrastructure.
