Why does Moshe give an accounting to God when God already knows everything? The shiur develops a profound yesod: God deliberately "suppresses" His knowledge and doesn't react to everything He sees, creating space for human free will and emotional growth. This theological principle becomes a practical blueprint for all relationships—we must leave room for spontaneity, refrain from scrutinizing every action, and focus on strengths rather than shortcomings.
The shiur opens with a fundamental question from Parshas Pekudei: Why does Moshe Rabbeinu give a detailed accounting of how he spent all the materials collected for the Mishkan when God, being omniscient, already knows exactly what happened? The Rambam (רמב"ם) and Shulchan Aruch rule that a gabbai tzedakah is not obligated to give an accounting, yet the Rama says he should do so voluntarily based on the principle "v'heyisem nekiyim mei'Hashem (ה׳) umei'Yisrael"—you should be clean in the eyes of God and man. Rabbi Zweig notes that while the requirement to appear clean before people makes sense (to avoid suspicion), what does it mean to be clean "in the eyes of God" when God knows the truth? This question leads to several related puzzles. The halacha (הלכה) requires that when a charity collector has accumulated small bills and wants to exchange them for larger denominations, he must give the money to someone else to make the exchange rather than doing it himself—even though God knows he's being honest. Similarly, the Gemara (גמרא) teaches that if you judge others favorably, God will judge you favorably—but what does this mean when God already knows the truth? Most perplexing is the entire concept of the Satan prosecuting before God in Sefer Iyov: why does an omniscient God need a prosecutor to inform Him of wrongdoing?
