Why does the Torah (תורה) introduce Shabbos (שבת) with "Vayakhel"—in an assembly—and why must we violate Shabbos to create Shabbos through the korban Tamid? Before the Chet HaEgel, Jews felt unity through their shared connection to Hashem (ה׳). After the sin, we lost that feeling and must now connect to each other first—Vayakhel—which itself becomes a portal back to Hashem, because yad eved k'yad rabo: connecting to His servants means connecting to Him.
Rabbi Zweig opens with two fundamental questions about Shabbos (שבת). First, what does it mean that Hashem (ה׳) "rests" on Shabbos when the natural world clearly continues—lightning strikes, rain falls, trees grow—all seemingly acts of melacha? Second, how can the kedusha of Shabbos require chillul Shabbos, as the korban Tamid of "shnei kevasim bnei shana temimim" must be brought on Shabbos itself? The shiur then addresses a textual difficulty: Why does the parsha of Vayakhel introduce the laws of Shabbos with "Vayakhel Moshe"—gathering the assembly—when the previous parsha, Ki Sisa, already commanded Shabbos without any requirement of hakhel? Chazal teach that Moshe instituted a takana that Shabbos must be taught b'hakhel, with the entire community gathered. If this is a fundamental condition of Shabbos, why was it absent from the earlier presentation? Additionally, the language "asher tzivah Hashem la'asos osam" implies a positive command to "do," yet Shabbos is primarily about refraining from melacha.

The shiur explains that Moshe's complete faithfulness—working solely for Hashem's agenda—transformed counting from an act of personal ownership into one that strengthened divine connection, thereby increasing blessings. Korach's self-interest inverted this principle, costing him everything.
Why does Rashi describe the Mishkan as "collateral" for Jewish sins? Rabbi Zweig develops the concept that God limited His own collection rights—accepting only the Mishkan's destruction rather than the nation's annihilation. This reflects the relationship of a father who reduces his own claims to ensure his children's survival.
Why does the Torah give a detailed accounting of silver and copper but not gold in Parshas Pekudei? The three metals represent three types of givers: those who give selflessly (gold), those seeking a two-way benefit (silver), and those buying honor (copper). The Midrash's three groups suspecting or praising Moshe reveal more about themselves than about Moshe—we judge others by our own standards.
