Why did Yehuda insist the brothers came only for their livestock business, contradicting Yosef's framing that they came to be with family? The shiur develops a fundamental machloket: Yosef sought Jewish identity in exile (tziyonim), allowing the brothers to quietly maintain their practices. Yehuda demanded that Goshen become legally separate from Egypt—a makom, a place with its own sovereignty—making it the precursor to Eretz Yisrael itself.
Rabbi Zweig opens with several perplexing Midrashim on Parshas Vayigash. One connects "Yehuda shalach lefanav" to the halacha (הלכה) of when to make the bracha on fire at Motzei Shabbos (שבת)—not until you benefit from the light. Another lists twenty parallels between the tragedies of Yosef and those of Tzion, concluding with Yehuda being sent and Hashem (ה׳) sending a malach to Tzion. A third states that when Yaakov and Yosef met, Yaakov was reciting Shema. These Midrashim seem disconnected from the narrative, yet they point to a deeper conceptual dispute. The shiur carefully reconstructs the sequence of events. Yosef initially tells his brothers to inform Yaakov to come down and settle in Goshen, where he will support them. Pharaoh then independently offers them "tuv ha'aretz"—which Rashi (רש"י) identifies as Goshen—and instructs them to bring their father and households, explicitly telling them to leave their vessels behind. Notably, Pharaoh's invitation mentions family but says nothing about bringing their livestock. When the brothers arrive in Goshen, Yosef prepares them: tell Pharaoh you are shepherds, anshei mikneh, and he will settle you in Goshen because shepherding is a to'eivah (abomination) in Egypt.

Why does seeing a sotah inspire one to become a nazir? The nazir's abstention creates a pre-sin state where body and soul exist in perfect harmony. This 30-day period corrects the internal contradiction that led to his original transgression.
Why does the Midrash connect Pharaoh's expulsion of the Jews to the mitzvah of shiluach hakan? The shiur develops a chiddush that Pharaoh's sin wasn't only drowning the children, but the insensitivity of expelling the parents afterward. The deeper analysis reveals that Pharaoh may have valued the Jews greatly and wanted to control them—making his expulsion an act of tremendous cruelty, not liberation.
Why does Moshe respond to the splitting of the sea with shirah rather than praise or thanksgiving? Rashi's use of "al libo" reveals that shirah is an emotional expression—a response of love to love. When Hashem shows personal care, the only adequate response is "I love You too," not mere gratitude or praise, and this principle applies to all relationships.

What is the primary purpose of the cities of refuge - protecting the accidental killer or something else? The shiur argues that creating respect for law takes precedence over providing sanctuary. True deterrence comes from recognizing the gravity of murder itself, not fear of punishment.
