Why does the Torah (תורה) record the exact quantities of materials donated for the Mishkan? Rabbi Zweig develops a transformative yesod: Moshe's accounting (pekudei) reveals that the Mishkan belongs to Klal Yisrael, not God. This ownership—of a pre-sin microcosm of creation—represents the ultimate atonement for the Golden Calf, more profound even than the second Luchos.
Rabbi Zweig opens with Rashi (רש"י)'s teaching that the word "Mishkan" alludes to "mashkon" (collateral), indicating it was taken as security for Israel's sins. The question is: why does this message appear specifically in Parshas Pekudei, in the context of accounting for materials donated? Furthermore, why does the Torah (תורה) need to record the exact quantities of gold, silver, and copper donated when these amounts were arbitrary—more than needed, purely voluntary, and unrelated to the actual design specifications? The Gemara (גמרא) suggests that because the materials were counted (pekudei), they became vulnerable to the evil eye (ayin hara), which led to the eventual destruction of the Temples. This is difficult: the counting was commanded by Torah and done by Moshe Rabbeinu himself—how could it be problematic? The Zohar states the opposite: precisely because Moshe did the counting, there was no problem. Moreover, what significance could random donation amounts possibly have that warrants their inclusion in the eternal Torah?
