Why did Yosef continue terrorizing his brothers even after they offered to become slaves together? The shiur explains that Yosef needed to transition them from independence to readiness for servitude, reconnect them to their father's vision, and prepare them mentally for Egypt's purpose: transforming from mortals focused on this world to immortals rooted in the World to Come.
Rabbi Zweig addresses a fundamental question in Parshas Vayigash: why does Yosef continue his harsh treatment of the brothers even after they've accomplished his goal? By the end of Parshas Mikeitz, the brothers had already demonstrated complete devotion to Binyamin, offering to all become slaves rather than abandon him. Yosef's objective—to rectify the sale and create unity around Bnei Rochel—appeared complete. Yet the terror continues through most of Vayigash. What more could Yosef accomplish? The answer lies in understanding the deeper purpose of the Egyptian descent. The Bris Bein HaBesarim describes the Jewish people going down "b'mati m'at"—as mortals—with the goal of achieving immortality. The entire Egyptian experience was designed as basic training for becoming servants of Hashem (ה׳), transitioning from connection to this world (Olam HaZeh) to rootedness in the World to Come (Olam HaBa). Yosef understood his role as facilitator of this process and recognized three essential preparations were needed.
