Why does Parshas Tetzaveh command making clothes for Aharon and his sons before the sin of the golden calf, when the bechorim (firstborn) still had the right to serve? The shiur develops a fundamental chakira: bechorim could perform only altar service (inherited from Adam HaRishon), while Kohanim were appointed as staff for the inner sanctuary. Even on the outer altar, a Kohen serves as staff and thus requires bigdei kehunah, while a bechor serves without them.
Rabbi Zweig addresses a fundamental question about the chronology and structure of temple service in Parshas Tetzaveh. The Rishonim dispute whether the parshiyos of Terumah, Tetzaveh, and Ki Sisa appear in chronological order. According to the Ramban (רמב"ן), they do—meaning Hashem (ה׳) commanded building the Mishkan and making priestly garments before the sin of the golden calf. But Rashi (רש"י) states in multiple places that the bechorim (firstborn) lost their right to perform temple service only after the golden calf. This creates a compelling contradiction: if Parshas Tetzaveh was given before that sin, why does the Torah (תורה) command making special garments for Aharon and his sons? The bechorim should still be performing the service, and they served from the time of Adam HaRishon without any special garments. The shiur develops a fundamental distinction between two types of temple service. The bechorim inherited their right to serve from Adam HaRishon, when sacrificial service on altars began. This original form of service was limited to bringing offerings on the mizbe'ach (altar) in the courtyard. It never included service inside the Heichal (sanctuary)—the menorah, shulchan, or ketores—because those forms of service did not exist before Sinai. Therefore, even without the sin of the golden calf, bechorim would be limited to outdoor altar service, while the Kohanim would serve inside the Heichal. The appointment of Kohanim was necessary for the higher, inner spiritual service of the Mishkan.
