Why did Aharon and his sons receive priestly garments before the sin of the golden calf, when the firstborn (bechorim) were supposed to perform the Temple service? The shiur distinguishes two types of service: altar work (originally designated for the firstborn) and inner-sanctuary work (always requiring priestly staff). Priestly garments indicate staff membership, not service requirements—revealing why Yaakov purchased the birthright from Esav.
This shiur addresses a fundamental question about the establishment of the priesthood: Parshas Tetzaveh, which precedes the sin of the golden calf chronologically (according to the Ramban (רמב"ן)), commands the making of priestly garments for Aharon and his sons. Yet Rashi (רש"י) states that until the Mishkan was erected, the Temple service belonged to the firstborn (bechorim), and they only lost this right due to their participation in the sin of the golden calf. If so, why were priestly garments being made for Aharon's family before the bechorim had sinned? Rabbi Zweig develops a fundamental distinction between two types of service in the Mishkan. The altar (mizbeach) in the courtyard corresponds to the private altars (bamos) that existed from Adam onward, where firstborn performed sacrificial service. This never required special clothing. However, the inner sanctuary (Ohel Moed) represents a higher level of holiness with no precedent in the bamah service—the menorah, incense altar, and showbread table. This inner service always required designated staff (Kohanim), never firstborn. The bechorim's ancestral right extended only to altar service, not to inner-sanctuary work.
