How could Hashem (ה׳) take the Mishkan as collateral when it belonged to Him? The shiur develops a profound yesod: Hashem owns the materials through hekdesh, but Klal Yisrael owns the creative genius. Betzalel's unique ability—working "b'tzel Kel"—enabled him to transcend normal physics and create vessels like the Aron that existed beyond space, showcasing Israel's spiritual creativity.
Rabbi Zweig opens with a fundamental question on Parshas Pekudei. Rashi (רש"י) explains that "Mishkan" comes from "mashkon" (collateral), alluding to how the two Batei Mikdash were taken as collateral for Klal Yisrael's sins. But collateral must belong to the debtor—how can Hashem (ה׳) take as collateral what already belongs to Him through hekdesh? Additionally, a Yerushalmi teaches that Reb Yochanan learned to knock before entering his house from the Kohen Gadol's bells announcing his entry—but why need permission to enter Hashem's house? And the Gemara (גמרא) describes the Temple's destruction as "bo goyim nachlascha"—as if Hashem destroyed His own property instead of punishing the people directly. The shiur explores Betzalel's unique qualities. Rashi states that the Aron is attributed to Betzalel singularly because "nasan nafsho"—he gave his life for it. Yet the Ramban (רמב"ן) notes that everyone volunteered for the Aron, meaning Betzalel actually had less work, not more. What does "nasan nafsho" mean? Furthermore, Chazal describe Betzalel as one who "yodea hayah letzaref osiyos shenivru bahem shamayim va'aretz"—he knew how to combine the letters with which heaven and earth were created. Why did Hashem grant him this cosmic creative power when he merely needed to follow blueprints?
