Why did Yaakov institute the optional tefillah of Maariv, and what's behind his conditional vow at Beis El? The shiur develops that Yaakov's unique avodah was creating "Beis Elokim"—transforming Hashem (ה׳)'s presence from Elokei Shamayim to a home with His family. His conditional acceptance of Hashem's protection established that only when the father actively provides and protects does a true family exist—the essential foundation for Beis Elokim.
Rabbi Zweig addresses a fundamental difficulty: Yaakov Avinu, the choicest of the Avos (bechir sheba'avos), instituted Tefillas Maariv, which is optional (reshus), while Avrohom and Yitzchok instituted the obligatory morning and afternoon prayers. Why would Yaakov's contribution be the least obligatory tefillah? Additionally, when Hashem (ה׳) promises Yaakov protection and success, Yaakov responds with what appears to be a conditional vow: "Im yihiyeh Elokim imadi"—"If God will be with me..." This seems inappropriate—Hashem already promised these things unconditionally. Furthermore, Yaakov's pledge to give maaser (10%) seems meager given Hashem's extraordinary promises. The Midrash permits this neder as an eis tzarah (time of distress), yet Hashem already guaranteed protection, so what distress exists? The shiur presents a fundamental yesod distinguishing Yaakov's avodah from that of Avrohom and Yitzchok. Avrohom's mission was to make Hashem Elokei ha'aretz—establishing God's presence on earth through chesed (חסד). Yitzchok's avodah was creating deeper connection through avodah and korban. Yaakov's unique contribution was creating "Beis Elokim"—a home for Hashem. A palace (heichal) is where a king conducts business; a home (bayis) requires a family. Without Klal Yisrael as a family, the Beis Hamikdash cannot be a true home for Hashem—only a palace or elevated place for avodah.

Why does seeing a sotah inspire one to become a nazir? The nazir's abstention creates a pre-sin state where body and soul exist in perfect harmony. This 30-day period corrects the internal contradiction that led to his original transgression.
Why does the Midrash connect Pharaoh's expulsion of the Jews to the mitzvah of shiluach hakan? The shiur develops a chiddush that Pharaoh's sin wasn't only drowning the children, but the insensitivity of expelling the parents afterward. The deeper analysis reveals that Pharaoh may have valued the Jews greatly and wanted to control them—making his expulsion an act of tremendous cruelty, not liberation.
Why does Moshe respond to the splitting of the sea with shirah rather than praise or thanksgiving? Rashi's use of "al libo" reveals that shirah is an emotional expression—a response of love to love. When Hashem shows personal care, the only adequate response is "I love You too," not mere gratitude or praise, and this principle applies to all relationships.

What is the primary purpose of the cities of refuge - protecting the accidental killer or something else? The shiur argues that creating respect for law takes precedence over providing sanctuary. True deterrence comes from recognizing the gravity of murder itself, not fear of punishment.
