Why did Moshe break the Luchos, and how did this change Israel's relationship with Hashem (ה׳)? The shiur develops a fundamental yesod: the Luchos symbolized a marriage covenant like Rivka's bracelets. Breaking them acknowledged that Israel's "naaseh v'nishmah" commitment at Sinai was premature—not a love that had transcended reasons. Yet Hashem's response through the 13 Attributes revealed a deeper truth: Israel's eternal bond rests not on Sinai's emotions, but on zechus avos—an ahava she'eino teluya b'davar rooted in Avrohom, Yitzchok, and Yaakov.
Rabbi Zweig opens with a fundamental question about Parshas Ki Sisa: What did breaking the Luchos accomplish? Breaking tablets doesn't nullify obligations—Israel was bound to the 613 mitzvos from Maamad Har Sinai, forty days before the Luchos were even given. If the Luchos' destruction changed nothing legally, how did it avert the death sentence hanging over Israel after the sin of the Golden Calf? The shiur introduces a second profound difficulty: Hashem (ה׳)'s response to the Chet HaEgel was to reveal the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy to Moshe, and the Gemara (גמרא) in Rosh Hashanah establishes a covenant (bris chrusah) that whenever Israel recites these Attributes, they invoke Divine compassion. Yet this seems contrary to the entire Jewish understanding of teshuvah—atonement requires a genuine internal transformation, regret, vidui, and commitment to change, not merely uttering "magic words." How can simply reciting the Yud-Gimel Middos accomplish forgiveness?
