Why does Parshas Vayakhel repeat the prohibition of building the Mishkan on Shabbos (שבת) when Ki Sisa already stated it? The shiur develops that Vayakhel reveals a new dimension: Shabbos restores Adam HaRishon's pre-sin state where the body drew life directly from the neshamah. Since Shabbos provides the same spiritual presence the Mishkan offers, there is no "lack" when we refrain from building—we already have everything we need.
This shiur explores Parshas Vayakhel's treatment of Shabbos (שבת) and reveals a profound understanding of what Shabbos accomplishes for the human being. The Torah (תורה) opens with "Eileh ha-devarim asher tzivah Hashem (ה׳) la'asos osam," and Chazal derive from the numerical value of "eileh ha-devar" (39) that this is the source for the thirty-nine melachos prohibited on Shabbos. Yet this raises fundamental questions: Shabbos was already commanded at Marah, at Matan Torah in the Aseres HaDibros, and in Parshas Mishpatim—why were the thirty-nine melachos never mentioned until now, six months after the first Shabbos? Furthermore, Parshas Ki Sisa already stated that building the Mishkan does not override Shabbos. Why does Vayakhel repeat this prohibition? The Ramban (רמב"ן) challenges Rashi (רש"י)'s interpretation that "ach es Shabsosai tishmoru" in Ki Sisa teaches that the Mishkan is not docheh Shabbos. The word "ach" is a miyut (exclusionary term)—but if it excludes something from Shabbos, it should mean we build the Mishkan despite Shabbos, not that we refrain from building! Additionally, the order differs: Ki Sisa mentions Mishkan first, then Shabbos; Vayakhel presents Shabbos first, then Mishkan. The Mizrachi notes this seems backwards—if Mishkan is the priority, why does Vayakhel lead with Shabbos?
