Why does Parshas Ki Sisa warn against violating Shabbos (שבת) for the Mishkan's construction? Rabbi Zweig opens by examining several puzzling Rashis in Parshas Ki Sisa. First, Rashi (רש"י) states that even though Moshe commanded the Jewish people regarding the Mishkan, they should not take Shabbos (שבת) lightly. How could anyone imagine Moshe would minimize Shabbos's importance? Second, Rashi appears to repeat himself—first warning not to view Shabbos as "cheap," then stating that despite building the Mishkan, Shabbos should not be pushed aside. The shiur also addresses why Moshe's name is omitted specifically from Parshas Tzav (as noted in the Zohar), and the apparent contradiction in the Rambam (רמב"ם) regarding the source of the mitzvah (מצוה) to build the Mishkan. The central thesis resolves these questions by distinguishing between two names and two aspects of the Sanctuary. The Gemara (גמרא) in Shevuos notes that the structure is sometimes called "Mikdash" and sometimes "Mishkan," used interchangeably in Scripture. Yet these names reflect distinct perspectives. The Mikdash is Hashem (ה׳)'s home—the place of divine presence where we serve God. The Mishkan, however, is the home of the Jewish people—our seat of government, the embodiment of Knesses Yisroel's sovereign power.
