Why did Yaakov send Yehuda to establish Goshen, and what was the negotiation about? The shiur develops the concept that Yehuda's mission was not merely to secure territory but to transform Goshen into a land of kedusha with self-rule, establishing it as Eretz Yisrael itself. This required making it a makom Torah (תורה) where clear halachic authority—not just theoretical learning—would concretize holiness in place.
The shiur opens with several compelling questions from Parshas Vayigash. Yaakov sent Yehuda ahead to Egypt before the family descended, and Rashi (רש"י) explains this was to establish a beis hatalmud. But why send Yehuda rather than Levi, who was the designated Rosh Yeshiva? When the brothers arrived, Pharaoh had already promised them Goshen through Yosef, yet they still negotiated and explicitly requested it. Why was this necessary? Additionally, when Yaakov reunited with Yosef, Rashi tells us Yaakov was reciting Shema while Yosef cried on his shoulder—what was the connection to that moment? The Midrash connects Yehuda's mission to the laws of Havdalah, asking when one may recite the blessing on fire—only after deriving benefit from it. The Midrash also draws extensive parallels between events in Yosef's life and the destiny of Tzion, concluding that just as Yehuda was sent to Yosef, so too an angel will be sent to Tzion before the final redemption. What is the connection between Yosef and Tzion, and what does Tzion itself represent?

Why does seeing a sotah inspire one to become a nazir? The nazir's abstention creates a pre-sin state where body and soul exist in perfect harmony. This 30-day period corrects the internal contradiction that led to his original transgression.
Why does the Midrash connect Pharaoh's expulsion of the Jews to the mitzvah of shiluach hakan? The shiur develops a chiddush that Pharaoh's sin wasn't only drowning the children, but the insensitivity of expelling the parents afterward. The deeper analysis reveals that Pharaoh may have valued the Jews greatly and wanted to control them—making his expulsion an act of tremendous cruelty, not liberation.
Why does Moshe respond to the splitting of the sea with shirah rather than praise or thanksgiving? Rashi's use of "al libo" reveals that shirah is an emotional expression—a response of love to love. When Hashem shows personal care, the only adequate response is "I love You too," not mere gratitude or praise, and this principle applies to all relationships.

What is the primary purpose of the cities of refuge - protecting the accidental killer or something else? The shiur argues that creating respect for law takes precedence over providing sanctuary. True deterrence comes from recognizing the gravity of murder itself, not fear of punishment.
