Why did Pharaoh invite Yaakov's family to Egypt during a famine, and what was Yaakov's blessing about? The shiur argues that Pharaoh sought to transform from king to deity by harnessing the godly power of Avrohom's family. Yaakov's blessing—granting Pharaoh control over the Nile—accomplished this, creating a model of absolute servitude that teaches Klal Yisrael how to serve God without guarantees or conditions.
Rabbi Zweig addresses one of the most perplexing narratives in Sefer Bereishis: Yaakov's encounter with Pharaoh in Parshas Vayigash. The basic storyline raises numerous difficulties. Why does the Torah (תורה) report Yaakov's courtesy visit to Pharaoh? Why does Yaakov tell Pharaoh that his years have been "few and bad," not reaching the years of his fathers—a statement for which Chazal say he was punished with 33 fewer years of life? What could possibly justify such seemingly ungrateful words? And why does Yaakov bless Pharaoh with control over the Nile's inundation? The shiur clarifies an important point about the blessing itself. The common understanding—that Yaakov created the Nile's overflow—is incorrect. The Nile overflowed from Creation, as indicated by its name "Pishon" (from the root meaning "to overflow") in Parshas Bereishis. What Yaakov's blessing accomplished was giving Pharaoh personal control over when the river would overflow. From that point forward, when Pharaoh approached the Nile, the water would rise "likras raglov" (toward his feet). This is demonstrated in the story of Bas Pharaoh finding Moshe. When she extended her hand toward the basket, she expected the water to come to her because as Pharaoh's daughter, she possessed this power. The Gemara (גמרא)'s opinion that her arm miraculously extended was teaching her that it wasn't her power bringing the child, but rather Hashem (ה׳)'s will.

Why does seeing a sotah inspire one to become a nazir? The nazir's abstention creates a pre-sin state where body and soul exist in perfect harmony. This 30-day period corrects the internal contradiction that led to his original transgression.
Why does the Midrash connect Pharaoh's expulsion of the Jews to the mitzvah of shiluach hakan? The shiur develops a chiddush that Pharaoh's sin wasn't only drowning the children, but the insensitivity of expelling the parents afterward. The deeper analysis reveals that Pharaoh may have valued the Jews greatly and wanted to control them—making his expulsion an act of tremendous cruelty, not liberation.
Why does Moshe respond to the splitting of the sea with shirah rather than praise or thanksgiving? Rashi's use of "al libo" reveals that shirah is an emotional expression—a response of love to love. When Hashem shows personal care, the only adequate response is "I love You too," not mere gratitude or praise, and this principle applies to all relationships.

What is the primary purpose of the cities of refuge - protecting the accidental killer or something else? The shiur argues that creating respect for law takes precedence over providing sanctuary. True deterrence comes from recognizing the gravity of murder itself, not fear of punishment.
