Rabbi Zweig explores a puzzling statement by Yisro in Parshas Yisro. After witnessing or hearing about the ten plagues, the splitting of the Red Sea, and other overwhelming miracles, Yisro declares, "Now I know that Hashem (ה׳) is greater than all the gods" specifically because of "badovar asher zadu aleihem"—that the Egyptians were punished measure for measure, drowning in water just as they had decreed that Jewish babies be drowned. Rashi (רש"י) connects this to the principle of midah k'neged midah. The question is stark: why does this particular detail—water for water—prove God's greatness more than the raw display of omnipotence? The answer lies in understanding what a "measured response" reveals. Someone who is all-powerful has no need to restrain himself or calibrate his reaction.
