Why does Haman, with unlimited wealth, power, and family, declare "everything I have means nothing" because one Jew won't bow? The shiur explores the Aron's structure—gold covering wood—to develop a fundamental principle: man's "space" (free will) exists not for self-absorption but as an opportunity to give. True happiness comes from defining ourselves by what we contribute, not what we possess—which is why Purim (פורים) centers on matanos l'evyonim.
Rabbi Zweig opens with a striking question from Parshas Terumah: The Aron was constructed of three boxes—gold inside, wood in the middle, and gold outside. The Gemara (גמרא) in Yoma derives that a talmid chacham's inside must match his outside (tocho k'varo). But if unity between inner and outer is the ideal, why isn't the Aron solid gold? Why is wood—the inferior material—at the core, and why does the Torah (תורה) call it "Aron atzei shitim" (a wooden ark) rather than a golden one? The answer lies in understanding the role of "space" in human existence. When Hashem (ה׳) created the world, everything obeyed His command—except the earth. Hashem commanded "etz pri oseh pri," a tree whose bark tastes like its fruit, but the earth produced only "oseh pri," trees that bear fruit without the bark having that taste. This wasn't rebellion—Hashem Himself prevented the earth from fully obeying. Why? To program into creation the possibility of not following Hashem's will. This earth, which did not fully execute Hashem's command, became the source material for Adam. "Adam yesodo me'afar"—man's body comes from soil that was designed with the capacity to refuse Hashem's instructions.
